Does your diversified digital wallet include green?
Cryptocurrency has had an incredible impact on the modern landscape in just a few short years. On a weekly basis, the average American will likely discuss crypto with friends or family, consider buying crypto, or watch an A-list celebrity sell crypto on primetime television commercials. Businesses are also beginning to define the nebulous metaverse—a digital environment optimized for crypto—just as Wall Street mainstreams crypto with exchange trading funds. Crypto is here to stay.
But with the diversification of crypto, this once-monolithic idea is being used in ways that far transcend its original purpose. The emergence of crypto and tokens on the blockchain has created a variety of options and philosophical purposes so wide that what you carry in your digital wallet can say a lot about who you are, what you value, and how you envision the future.
The growing number of eco-minded crypto shows that the tech can leverage its value to be an environmental force for good, solving some of the world’s most imminent and frustrating ecological concerns. Keep reading to find out how you can get involved.
There’s more than one type of crypto?
There are more than 11,000 Bitcoin ATMs in the United States, and that particular cryptocurrency has a daily trading volume that’s often north of $20 billion. While Bitcoin may rule the conversation as the world’s leading crypto-currency, it’s hardly the only one. As of February 2022, the top five cryptocurrencies were Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Tether (USDT), Binance Coin (BNB) and US Dollar Coin (USDC). Some of these coins–like Bitcoin and Ethereum–are based on a scarcity model, while others–Tether and US Dollar Coin–are backed by fiat currencies like the U.S. Dollar or Euro. Not all cryptos are created equally.
What’s crypto vs. a token?
Adding to the diversity of ideas in the crypto space, we also have tokens. What’s the difference between a cryptocurrency and a token? That’s a fantastic question.
Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies used in financial transactions, such as giving or receiving payment for goods, services or otherwise. These transactions happen along the blockchain. Tokens are a form of cryptocurrencies, but with an important difference. Crypto tokens represent an asset or specific use on the blockchain. Investopia explains it perfectly here:
“The term crypto token refers to a special virtual currency token or how cryptocurrencies are denominated. These tokens represent fungible and tradable assets or utilities that reside on their own blockchains. Crypto tokens are often used to fundraise for crowd sales, but they can also serve as a substitute for other things. These tokens are usually created, distributed, sold, and circulated through the standard initial coin offering (ICO) process, which involves a crowdfunding exercise to fund project development.”
What are some eco-friendly examples?
At the Land Betterment Exchange, we believe investors receive the most return when they include eco-friendly initiatives in their wallet. That’s because what’s good for the planet is good for your wallet in the long run. LBX is just one example of an eco-friendly crypto tokens that can add a splash of green–and a sense of good–to your investment strategy. Here are a few we love:
- SolarCoin (SLR): SolarCoin is a cryptocurrency that can be purchased, sold and spent just like any other decentralized cryptocurrency. However, this one’s value is tied to sustainability. SolarCoin creates 1 coin for every Megawatt-hour generated from solar technology. Learn more about how that works here.
- Powerledger (POWR): While SolarCoin is concerned with energy creation, Powerledger facilitates the tradition of energy and environmental commodities. This helps create more stable energy grids. Learn more here.
- Gridcoin (GRC): A slightly different take on sustainability, Gridcoin is an efficient blockchain that uses idle computing power to help carry out research initiatives at the Berkeley open Infrastructure Network for Computing. Check it out.

Get involved with LBX
Of course, if you’re going to add a splash of green to your digital wallet, LBX is an initiative that will do just that–and since it’s tied to the restoration of land, we think it’s always going to be in demand.
LBX is a unique, blockchain-based solution to a largely overlooked environmental and social problem in the United States. Widespread closures in the fossil fuel industry and ineffective government penalties have left vast areas of impacted lands unremediated and many communities without economic opportunity. There is an estimated $15B worth of work that needs to be done to restore these lands to their original state, but no real model to incentivize or fund that work.
The goal of the LBX token is to leverage the innovative power of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies to turn this long-standing and poorly addressed issue into a thriving market with real incentives for participation. This will replace the negative incentive model that is currently failing to resolve the issue, driving environmental restoration, creating jobs for impacted communities, and offering a streamlined means for corporations to offset their impact in the process.
